Summer Assignments 2013-2014
Freshmen | Sophomores | Juniors | Seniors
- Biology (regular and advanced) – Insect Collection: Students will need to pick up collecting supplies before summer break -- Dates & times will be at the end of May and this will be announced. Ms. Montag will work with Ms. Hudnall to arrange times for the incoming freshmen who will qualify to be placed in biology, after they have taken the test in May. Students will be required to collect 40 insects and keep a field journal (spiral memo notebook) of their findings. An insect order checklist and project information can be found by clicking here.
- English 1 - Read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and visit the following website for all assignment details: http://jacquinsummer.weebly.com
- Advanced English I - Welcome to STA! Your assignment contains two parts and is worth a possible 100 points. In addition, we will discuss the memoir the first few weeks of school, so you should bring your copy of the book to class daily and be prepared to discuss. Read the novel When I was Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago. Respond to the questions in the attachment. A digital copy of your typed and labeled answers is due the first day of school. You can bring these to class on a flash drive or on your netbook. You will be graded on content, grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Click here to view the attachment.

- World Literature - Sophomores will read A Thousand Splendid Suns. The regular World Lit students will take a multiple choice and short answer quiz on the second day of school. (See attachment)
- Advanced World Literature - Sophomores will read A Thousand Splendid Suns and do a two page critical analysis essay based on a specific prompt. (See attachment)
- Advanced World History - Students must purchase the book A History of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren. The first chapter of the book will be assigned reading. Students will receive a study guide of questions to answer in note form as they read. During the first week of school, students will take an open-note test over the reading. Subsequent readings will be assigned from the book over the course of the school year. (See attachment)

- American Literature - Read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Annotate the novel as you read, marking passages you find significant because they relate to themes you’ve identified or want to discuss. - AP Language & Composition/American Literature - Read The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. You should read this novel well and annotate as you read. On the first day of school, all students will take an open note test over The Scarlet Letter. The test will cover plot, characters, analysis and quotation identification. In addition to the test, the AP Language and Composition class will devote the first few weeks of school engaging in discussions and activities centered on the novel. The edition that you need to purchase is: The Scarlet Letter and Other Writings, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Norton, W. W. & Company, ISBN #9780393979534. We will be using essays present in this edition. You need study a list of rhetorical techniques, stylistic devices, and rhetorical patterns. Not only will you be tested over them during the first week of school, you will apply your knowledge of them throughout the school year while analyzing literature. (See Attachment)
- Theology/ Social Concerns - Read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Just the first book though you may read the whole trilogy.

- American History (Mr. Egner’s Sections) - Read these essays- “Where Columbus Was Coming From” , “Pre-Columbian American Cultural History”, “Native American History, Pt. 1”, and “Native American History, Pt. 2”. Take brief notes over main ideas and be prepared to take an open-note quiz the first week of school.

- Senior Advanced Placement Students - As an AP Literature student at St. Teresa's
Academy, you are required to read Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy this summer. You should read this work well, annotating along the way. On the first day of school, all students need to be prepared to take an open note test over it. The test will be short answer character and quotation identification. In addition to the test, the class will devote the first few weeks of school engaging in discussions and activities centered on this novel. I know that the novel is lengthy, but I chose it because it is a very interesting and entertaining example of modern fiction. If you start right away, then you shouldn’t have a problem completing it by the start of school. Because there are multiple translations of this work, it is important that we all have the same edition. The edition that I want you to purchase is: ISBN-10: 0143035002 - Senior College Composition - As a College Composition student at St. Teresa's Academy, you are required to read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. On the first day of school, all students need to be prepared to take an open note test over the novel. The test will include quotation identification and significance, as well as character identification. - Western Civilization I - Students will be provided with a required readings list and a study guide of questions/reflections over these readings.
