St. Teresa’s Academy - College Prep for Young Women Since 1866

Single-sex Education

Long before there was the idea of single-sex education being beneficial to young women, it had been a staple of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Noteworthy is St. Teresa’s Academy, established in Kansas City before the KC public school system.

Some of the advantages of single sex education include:

  • Natural social pressures with the opposite sex do not occur during a school day
  • A girl is more likely to take advanced classes in math and science
  • A girl will spend more time studying
  • In the single sex environment, a girl is less inclined to be self-conscious for guessing wrong
  • Some girls "dumb down" in the co-ed environment
  • There are not as many classroom management issues
