The Freshman kicked off their basketball season with an away trip all the way to good ol' Jayhawk country, home of the NCAA Division I Mens College Basketball Championship.  They faced off against a tough competitor in Lawrence West.  The stars came out slow but picked it up in the second half.  Both teams scored 14 points in the third and fourth quarters, but unfortunately for the Stars, it was not enough to overcome Lawrence West's first half lead.  The stars lost 41-22.  Katie Beirne showed outstanding defense against an excellent ballhandler, picking her 3 times and ending the game with a total of 5 steals!  Katelyn Erhnman showed board dominance with 6 rebounds!  Mary LeRoy and Lauren Barrett tied for leading scorers, each with 5 points.  The stars go home on Thursday for the STA basketball home opener against another Lawrence foe, Lawrence South.  (Barret 5, Leroy 5, Beirne 4, Ehrnman 4, Freeman 2, Nulton 2)

The Freshman had their home opener Thursday against Lawrence South.  The stars chose to open up with some serious shooting and tenacious defense all over the court.  The stars showed complete control of the game from start to finish, causing 28 turnovers and unleashing 44 points against L.S.  Leading all scorers was Jennifer Blake in double digits with 10 points, hitting two from downtown.  Following close behind her was Lauren Barrett with 8 points from lane penetration.  Mary Kate Feuerborn joined Jennifer from downtown with her own 3 pointer, adding to her total of 7 points.  Shannen Freeman shot 100% from the Free Throw line, putting away two towards the end of the 2nd quarter.  It was a decisive and complete team effort as the stars sailed to victory, 44-25.  The stars face off against border rival, Miege, this Saturday at Miege at 1:30.  (Blake 10, Barret 8, Feuerborn 7, Beirne 6, Ehrnman 6, Freeman 4)

Friends became foes in the border rival against Miege Saturday.  The freshmen stars came out strong in the first quarter showing complete offensive and defensive dominance taking an 18 - 8 lead.  The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle as both sides only put up 2 points going into half time with a score of 20 -10.  Miege would not go away and came out strong in the 3rd quarter showing tenacious defense, disrupting the stars offense and dominating on the offense boards.  Miege chipped away at the star's lead making the score 28-22 at the end of the quarter.  The stars kicked it into fourth gear in the 4th quarter, hitting the boards and causing turnovers putting pressure on Miege.  The stars were able to hold strong and take the victory, 35-31.  Leading all scorers for the stars was Katie Beirne, with 9 points, who also led in steals with 5.  Showing her own tenacious defense was Katelyn Ehrnman, who also led with 5 steals and continued her rebounding dominance with 8 boards.  Katelyn put up 6 points as well.  Mary LeRoy followed close behind with 3 steals of her own and 6 rebounds.  Lauren Barrett continued her consistent offensive play putting up 6 points for the stars.  (Beirne 9, Barrett 6, Ehrnman 6, Blake 4, LeRoy 4, Nulton 4, Freeman 2)

Katie Beirne getting a steal!
The stars came out strong in Monday night's game against Bishop Ward High School, scoring 9 points in the 1st quarter to Ward's 6.  However, Ward put on the heat definsively keeping the Stars scoreless in the 2nd quarter while putting on a clinic on the offensive boards, taking the lead into halftime, 16-9.  The stars were not to be outshown, and after regrouping at halftime, came out with tenacious defense and put on their own shooting clinic, outscoring Ward 34-3 in the second half!  Katie Beirne (pictured) maintained her aggressive defense getting 5 steals, joined by Mary LeRoy with 5 steals.  Katelyn Ehrnman continued to show board dominance pulling down 9 rebounds, and Mary LeRoy showed her own tenacious rebounding with 9 boards of her own.  Leading all scorers was Jennifer Blake, simply owning the arc hitting 3- three pointers in the second half, adding to her total of 16 points, a game high.  Katie Beirne was close behind with 12 points, along with Katelyn Erhnman with 8 points.  The stars finished the game scoring a season high 43-19.  The stars play Thursday at 4:00PM at home against Blue Springs to wrap up this part of the season until after Christmas break.  (Blake 16, Beirne 12, Ehrnman 8, LeRoy 4, Barrett 2)

In what proved to be the most exciting game of the season thus far, the freshmen Stars went into double overtime against Blue Springs before heading into Christmas break. The Stars came out a little slow offensively, scoring just 9 points in the first 2 quarters. However 6 of those points came from downtown, as Jennifer Blake and Katelyn Ehrnman both drained 3 pointers. The Stars went into halftime down, 9 – 14.  In the 2nd half, the stars came out strong putting 14 points on the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter alone.  It was a group effort as 5 players contributed points in the 3rd quarter.  Katie Beirne was an automatic from the free throw line, hitting 4 for 4.  Katelyn Ehrnman was a dominator under the basket tearing away an absolute ridiculous 16 rebounds in the game!  Going into the 4th quarter, the Stars led 23-19, but Blue Springs would not go away.  The Stars held onto a 3 point lead until the very end, when Blue Spring shot up a Hail Mary that went in, sending the game into overtime.  Blue Springs rode the excitement into overtime and led by 3 with just seconds left on the clock.  This time it was the Stars turn to come back.  An inbounds play was drawn up to get Jennifer Blake a 3 point shot, after she had hit 2 already in the game, but as Jennifer shot, she was knocked down.  She went to the line with a mere few seconds on the clock and the pressure to have to hit all three free throws to keep the Stars alive.  It was every kid’s dream as they play basketball in their driveway growing up…seconds tick away and you have the opportunity to handle the pressure and make the free throws that count.  And she did!  Sending the Stars into yet another overtime!  However, Blue Springs showed to be more durable as they held strong and beat the Stars 39-35, receiving points from 3 players in overtime that hadn’t scored the entire game.  While defeat showed in the Stars eyes, and sweat mixed with tears, they held on to the fact that they made incredible things happen in that game.  Jennifer Blake continued her offensive dominance by putting 13 points up, shooting 100% from the free throw line.  Katie Beirne played tenacious defense getting 4 steals, and showed great court vision tacking up 4 assists. Mary LeRoy continued consistent play by tearing down 8 of her own rebounds.  Lauren Barrett gave support getting 2 steals and putting up 3 points. (

It's party time!  The Stars relaxed and celebrated Christmas with a party, kindly hosted by Mrs. Blake!  It was great fun, and quite interesting, as you can see by the pics...

question...what possibly could Brenna (in the backround) be doing?

The Stars kicked off 2009 by facing off against Kansas rival St. Thomas Aquinas.  The Stars showed a little rust against Aquinas giving too many offensive boards away, but held their own putting up 13 points in the first half.  Aquinas had 13 as well, until a last second, very long shot sent the game into halftime with the Stars down, 13-16. After regrouping and digging deep the Stars came out with tenacious defense and better rebounding in the 3rd quarter holding Aquinas to only 2 points.  The Stars were still a little rusty offensively, but managed to put up 9 points of their own.  However, the 4th quarter went to Aquinas with complete board dominance, especially offensively giving themselves multiple attempts, and ultimately putting 15 more points on the scoreboard.  The Stars struggled with the increase in pressure defensively, but managed to build some momentum in the end, but the time ran out, as the Stars lost, 30-34.  Katelyn Ehrnman led all scorers with 14 points, hitting one from downtown in the 4th quarter as the Stars tried to come back.  Jennifer Blake put up 7 points, hitting a 3 pointer early in the game.  Emily Holt contributed with 4 points.  Katelyn Ehrnman continued to hit the boards, getting 8 rebounds and joining her was Mary LeRoy with 6. (Ehrnman 14, Blake 7, Holt 4, LeRoy 2, Beirne 2, Barrett 1)

The Stars licked their Aquinas wounds and came out fighting against O’Hara on Wednesday afternoon.  Led by Katelyn Ehrnman’s dribble penetration and 5 points, the Stars put up 11 points to O’Hara’s 4 in just the first quarter!  O’Hara would not back down and came out stronger in the 2nd, outscoring the Stars 8-6, making the score 17-12 going into the half with the Stars having a slight advantage.  Determined to take the game completely away from O’Hara, the Stars unleashed an offensive strike in the 3rd quarter almost doubling their entire first half score, putting 16 points on the board.  Leading the charge were Jennifer Blake and Emily Holt who both put up 6 points in the 3rd.  Emily Holt finding her sweet spot behind the arc, putting two 3’s on the board, while Jennifer Blake showed strength in knocking down her own 3 pointer while getting fouled and accepting the 4 point play, knocking one down from the charity stripe.  The 4th quarter showed a concerted team effort as nearly every Star put points on the board.  Meg Nulton led the charge in the 4th, putting up 4 points of her own.  Mary Cate Feuerborn added 2 to her 5 point game total.  Lauren Barrett proved that size does not matter as she dominated the boards, tearing down 6 rebounds.  Katie Beirne showed her court vision getting 5 assists, and Gigi O’Brien showed her defensive ability at finding the ball, leading with 5 steals.  Brenna Scott had a steal of her own, along with 2 rebounds. The Stars finished with a decisive victory, winning 40-27.(Blake 11, Ehrnman 7, Holt 6, Feuerborn 5, Nulton 4, LeRoy 4, O’Brien 2, Beirne 1)

The Stars faced off against cross state rival, Visitation Academy, who traveled from St. Louis to play all three STA teams on Saturday.  It was a tough battle as both teams fought hard in each and every quarter, matching point for point with ties and lead changes every basket.  It was a 7-7 game at the end of the first quarter with Jennifer Blake leading the Stars with 5 points.  At the end of the half, the Stars were down by 1, with a score of 14-15. It was a defensive battle in the 3rd quarter as each team only put up minimal points, 4 for the Stars and 3 for Visitation, tying the game at 18-18 going into the 4thJennifer Blake led all scorers in the first half, putting up 8 points, including one from behind the arc.  Jennifer went down hard in the 3rd quarter, though, spraining her ankle, out for the rest of the game.  However, the Stars stood strong without their leading scorer and stayed in the game.  Katelyn Ehrnman stepped it up offensively scoring 10 points in the 4th quarter.  The Stars had a 3 point lead with just minutes left in the game, but Visitation would not go away.  After a couple of inopportune turnovers by the Stars, Visitation was able to convert and take a 1 point lead.  Katie Beirne was able to penetrate baseline to take a tough shot, but as the refs swallowed their whistles, she was unable to get the call.  The Stars made a tough defensive stop once again, giving themselves the opportunity to squeak out a shot, but time expired before they were able to get one off and the Stars fell short, losing to Visitation 28-29.  Leading all scorers was Katelyn Ehrnman with 14 points, followed by Jennifer Blake who put up 8 in one half of play.  Emily Holt and Mary LeRoy dominated on the boards each leading with 7 rebounds.  And Katie Beirne showed her defensive tenacity with 6 steals, while Mary LeRoy hung out like a vulture in the front court taking away 4 steals of her own.  (Ehrnman 14, Blake 8, LeRoy 2, Beirne 2, Holt 1, O'Brien 1)

As a little girl grows up in this area, some questions come to her attention many times throughout grade school, ”Will you go to Sion or will you go to St. Teresa’s Academy?  Will you be a Star or will you be a Storm?  Will black and gold permeate your wardrobe or purple and white?"  One thing is known for sure, once you make that decision, there is no going back and you are a Star or a Storm for life and the competition begins between you and those that choose differently…

It is the BIGGEST rival in our school’s history; the Sion Storm came into our gym for what always promises to be an extremely competitive game against the Stars.  Both teams came out strong defensively in the first quarter, the Stars putting up just 2 more points than the Storm, with Mary LeRoy leading the way with 4 points.  The Stars began to pull away in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Storm once again, and going into halftime with a 5 point lead, 15-10.  The Stars remained steady in the 3rd quarter continuing their scoring with Katie Beirne and Meg Nulton taking offensive control, each putting up 4 points.  The Stars led by 8 going into the 4th, but the Storm only grew in strength as they fought to comeback, hitting a three pointer and hitting 4 for 5 from the free throw line.  However, the Stars stayed strong, taking care of the ball, holding onto the lead, and winning 31-28.  Leading all scorers was Katie Beirne, who put up 9 points to go with her all around stats of 3 assists, 3 steals and 4 rebounds!  Mary LeRoy and Katelyn Erhnman both dominated on the boards each pulling down 6.  Mary LeRoy led in steals, getting 5 takeaways.  It was a Star studded effort as 5 Stars tied for second leading scorer, each with 4 points – Mary Cate Feuerborn, Lauren Barrett, Mary LeRoy, Meg Nulton, and Katelyn Ehrnman.  (Beirne 9, Feuerborn 4, Barrett 4, LeRoy 4, Nulton 4, Ehrnman 4, Holt 2)

The Stars went to Lawrence once again this season to face off against Lawrence South, a team the Stars had beaten at home the previous month.  However, this time would prove to be a more difficult game as Lawrence South came out stronger and more determined to make it a tough game.  The Stars came out strong offensively outscoring LS 17-8 in the first half.  Lauren Barrett led in the first half with 5 points, hitting one from downtown in the 1st quarter.  Showing her own range, Katie Beirne put one in from beyond the arc in the 1st quarter as well.  Defensively, the Stars gave little opportunity for LS to attempt shots as they dominated in ball control getting 15 steals in the first half alone.  Mary LeRoy was a vulture on defense, swooping in to take any pass in her direction.  She had 5 steals in the first half, and continued in the 2nd half, ending the game with 8 steals!  Lauren Barrett and Katie Beirne added to the list of takeaways, with 5 and 6 steals.  The second quarter showed great ball movement for the stars as Shannen Freeman and Mary Cate Feuerborn put up 2 points each.  The Stars came out strong in the 3rd quarter, putting another 9 points on the board, but LS showed they had some fight left and put 9 points of their own on the board.  They continued to claw their way back in the 4th, knocking down a couple of 3’s, but time ran out and the Stars held on, winning 30-25.  Katelyn Ehrnman was a monster on the boards, ripping down 12 rebounds.  Mary LeRoy contributed with 9 boards of her own.  Leading all scorers for the Stars was Katie Beirne with 7 points.  The scoring was well spread as 3 stars tied for second in scoring, each scoring 5 points; Mary LeRoy, Lauren Barrett and Katelyn Ehrnman.  Katelyn Ehrnman showed her excellent court vision by contributing 5 assists. (Beirne 7, Barrett 5, Ehrnman 5, LeRoy 5, Holt 4, Feuerborn 2, Freeman 2)

The Stars went out to Lee’s Summit to play in the Lee’s Summit Freshmen B Tournament.  They faced off against William Chrisman in their first game, taking early control and showing complete defensive dominance.  Brenna Scott came out like the Tasmanian devil on defense ripping away 5 steals in the 1st quarter alone!  Shannen Freeman came out on fire offensively knocking down 6 points in the 1st quarter.  Gigi O’Brien took over in the 2nd quarter putting up 6 points of her own.  Brenna Scott and Lauren Barrett each put up 4 points in the first half, helping the Stars take a 22-2 lead into halftime.  The 2nd half was all Stars as Meg Nulton lit it up, putting up 6 points, along with Shannen Freeman, who refused to be stopped, as she put up 6 more points, adding to her 12 point game total as the leading scorer!  Gigi O’Brien did not back off, as she put up 3 more points, along with Lauren Barrett who put up 3 more as well.  It was all Gigi, Lauren and Paige Wendland on the boards, as Gigi ripped down 9 rebounds, Lauren 8, and Paige 7.  Brenna Scott  showed no mercy in the second half and finished the game with a ridiculous 14 steals.  A season high on the freshmen team. Lauren Barrett followed close behind with an amazing 8 steals to add to her stats along with her 6 assists.  The Stars finished the game victorious winning 44-6.  (Freeman 12, O’Brien 9, Barrett 7, Nulton 6, Scott 4, LeRoy 4, Wendland 2)

The Stars went on to the winners’ bracket to face off against Staley for the Championship of the Lee’s Summit Freshmen B tournament.  It was a defensive battle in the 1st quarter as both teams only put up 4 points.  However, the Stars picked up the tempo in the 2nd quarter and put up 8 points while holding Staley to 0 points, taking a 12-4 lead into halftime.  It was Mary Cate Feuerborn leading the offensive charge in the 1st quarter, putting up 5 points, hitting one from downtown.  However, Staley came out swinging in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Stars 8-4.  But the Stars held strong in the 4th, getting scoring from 5 different players and consistent free throws from Mary LeRoy, who put down 3 for 4 from the charity stripe.  Jennifer Blake knocked one down from downtown, and Brenna Scott kept her offensive strike going as she put up another 2 points in the 4th, leading all scorers with 6 points.  Lauren Barrett also led with a total of 6 points. The Stars finished strong, winning their first tournament, 30-20.  Brenna Scott was once again a demon on defense, leading the Stars with 6 steals, followed closely behind by Lauren Barrett with 4 steals.  Paige Wendland and Gigi O’Brien tagged teamed on the boards, each ripping down 5 rebounds.  It was a supporting cast in the scoring department as both Marys contributed 5 points, Mary Cate Feuerborn and Mary LeRoy.  Paige Wendland put up 4 points as well.  (Scott 6, Barrett 6, Feuerborn 5, LeRoy 5, Wendland 4, Blake 3, Freeman 1)
